And a short story about potatoes…
The history of Harresø Kro dates back to 1609. All the names of the owners from that year until today are on record. The inn obtained royal charter in 1820.
In 1759, on April 2, some German peasants came to stay the night. The innkeeper (Klaus Pedersen) was paid for board and food in – potatoes!!! Two potatoes for each guest, 12 altogether, and one as gratuity. The latter was fed to the pigs.
Now, 13 was not exactly a lucky number. The innkeeper, however, was lucky. He grew the rest of the potatoes in the garden of the inn, and was later able to supply the neighbourhood with this new food.
The story goes that these 13 potatoes were probably the first ones to be imported to Denmark. For many years the potatoes were known in the neighbourhood as “Harresø Apples”.
